 What is Yalda

Yalda is the first and longest night of winter in the Iranian calendar. Although it’s just a night like any other nights, people do special things on this night. For one thing, they buy a lot of fruits and nuts to eat after dinner.  Watermelon and pomegranate are the two favourite fruits that people buy for this knight. They also buy a lot of dried fruit, snacks, and sunflower/pumpkin seeds. It is a tradition for Iranian families to go to their grandparents and celebrate Yalda with them. In the good old days when life was simpler, grandchildren would gather around grandmas on Yalda and listen to their stories while enjoying the nuts and fruits. Another thing that many families would do was reading poems from Hafez. Hafez is regarded as one of the greatest Iranian poets who lived in the 14^th century. The common belief is that people can find out what awaits them in future by reading one of Hafez’s poems selected by chance. In other words, they look upon Hafez as a fortune teller  of all times. Yet this is a myth as Hafez was just an ordinary man with an extraordinary talent for writing poems

Yalda is still valued by Iranian people, but not in the same way. On the one hand, people specially the young, are more inclined to their smartphones and prefer to play online games or chat with their friends on this night. On the other hand, life expenses are much higher than they were in the past. As a result, many families cannot afford to buy as much fruits and nuts as they like. Nonetheless. Yalda remains a highly-celebrated date in Iranian culture as it is one of the few occasions when family members and relatives can gather and have fun
